My first home brew 8-bit computer project is inspired by the many wonderful projects I have seen around the Internet, most particularly the work of Ben Eater. I cannot recommend Ben's videos enough if you want a clear and fun explanation of digital electronics and computer hardware. Another influence for the project is the "panel computer" hobby projects of the 1970s, with much of the control panel modelled on things like the Altair 8800.
This project is making use of mostly old parts and supported by an arduino compatible microcontroller. I am trying to do as much as I can in "real hardware" but without spending too much money. The fab.8 is being built and tested on solderless breadboards before being transferred to prototyping PCBs and put into a nice case with retro styling. The project is expected to be completed in January 2020.
You can follow the progress and see parts of the system being built and tested on my streams and I may make a video once we have the final thing working.
